Seafood storeClient work

8.94 MB to 0.77 MB Without Delaying Tracking

I reduced an Irish seafood store’s homepage transfer by capping oversized image candidates. Tracking was kept outside the speed deferral work.

The brief

Context

An Irish seafood store’s product cards offered full-resolution originals to the browser. Small cards could download large images. I reduced that transfer without using tracking delay as a speed shortcut.

What I fixed

Delivery noteDelivered Aug 2026

  1. Inspect the candidates. I traced the oversized downloads to the largest image candidates in product, lookbook and collection cards.
  2. Cap card images. I limited those candidates to 1500 pixels wide. Smaller originals stayed available. The product gallery retained full-size images for zoom.
  3. Check the storefront. I compared the live homepage’s transfer and rendering. I kept analytics outside the script deferral work and recorded functional checks separately from PageSpeed.

Result

Client work Done for real clients. Client details are anonymised.

The 4 August comparison recorded 8.94 MB to 0.77 MB of homepage transfer. That result belongs to the image cap, not an earlier script-loading pass.

Lab transfer is not field performance or a sales result. Real-user field data already classified the site as fast before the work; I do not present this as proof of a conversion uplift.

What this means for a similar business

I check what the browser actually downloads before removing functionality. Correct image sizing can reduce page weight while keeping the measurement needed to judge the business result.
