Quoting Made-to-Order Products by Hand: Configurator, Quote Engine and Production Orders

I build configurators that validate a specification, calculate a quote on the server and carry approved details into production records.

Describe my task

How I solve it

What I build

I build a configurator backed by a server quote engine. It validates the specification and applies the agreed price and material rules. Approval carries that specification into a production record and printable job sheet. If stock reservation or consumption is in scope, those steps have their own explicit state and checks.

The process

How it works

6 steps. Scope and a fixed price are agreed before the first one.

  1. Map a bounded product family, allowed combinations and quote rules.

  2. Implement server validation and calculations against synthetic examples.

  3. Present the specification and price for human approval.

  4. Create a production record from the approved version and generate the job sheet.

  5. Add material reservation and consumption only where agreed.

  6. Test changes, cancellations and invalid specifications across the whole flow.

Handover

What you get

  • A shared specification from quote to production record.
  • Server-side validation and calculation rules.
  • Printable instructions linked to the approved version.
  • Synthetic acceptance cases and a runbook for rule changes.

Built with

  • A configurator
  • server quote engine
  • material rules
  • a B2B workspace
  • production records
  • printable job sheets and optional stock workflows
  • The related intake can feed drafts into human review

Proof

Done before, with dates and numbers

Client work Done for real clients. Client details are anonymised.

Before → after

The intended change is from separately maintained quote and workshop documents to a flow that carries an approved specification between them. The referenced manufacturing build includes these components, but its documented test cycles are synthetic. They do not prove a real order volume or business improvement.

  • Made-to-order manufacturer

a configurator, server quote engine, material rules, B2B workspace and production records are documented. The related warehouse PWA is a prototype with no established client attribution.

What you can look at

A proposed synthetic walkthrough: select a valid configuration, obtain a server quote, approve it and create the production record and job sheet. An invalid combination shows the rejection path. No real catalogue or customer order appears in the sample.

Client details anonymised. The documented end-to-end test cycles use synthetic data. No order volume, catalogue size, revenue or time saving is claimed.

Price and timeline

What it costs and how it runs

A Custom Engineering Project starts from USD 1,500. I quote after we agree the product family, rules and acceptance cases. Adding stock, accounting or further product families changes the scope and delivery date.

A note from Daniilbefore you decide

When you don’t need this

If products have fixed prices and a standard order already contains every production detail, use the existing store or ERP. A custom configurator is useful when valid combinations and pricing rules need a shared implementation.

Questions

What people ask about this

Can a buyer override the price in the browser?

The proposed design calculates and validates the quote on the server. Browser input describes the requested specification; it does not establish the payable price.

Does AI decide what gets manufactured?

No. If AI reads an incoming request, it produces a draft. A person approves the specification before it becomes a production record.
