The symptom

Symptom report

Shopify has the paid order. The Facebook & Instagram channel looks connected. You search for Purchase and find nothing, or only some orders arrive. I would keep that installation in place until one test shows which step failed.

The short version

Direct answer

For a Facebook pixel not tracking purchases on Shopify, I check the destination first and the payment path last. Between them I check duplicate installs, app-pixel status and data access, the domain, and consent. This gives each change a reason and a test.

Shopify’s Meta pixel instructions explain where to select the pixel and warn that keeping manual theme code alongside the channel can produce duplicate or incorrect reports.

Where to look

Causes, ranked

Causes, ranked6 causes

  1. Different destination IDs

I compare the pixel selected under Facebook & Instagram with the dataset I am inspecting in Events Manager. I write down both privately, then select the intended destination before testing.
  2. Two installations

I inventory the channel, custom pixels, theme code and any tracking app. I look for two senders before adding another. Two event paths are a reason to investigate, not proof that every order is doubled.
  3. App pixel status or data access

I open Settings > Customer events and inspect the app pixel. Shopify documents that Optimized data access can pause some or all marketing-pixel data when it detects oversharing. This is separate from the channel’s Standard, Enhanced or Maximum setting.
  4. Domain or store mismatch

I record the domain used for the checkout and compare it with the store and destination under inspection. I check any domain warning that the account actually displays rather than assuming domain verification explains every missing Purchase.
  5. Consent

I test the banner’s accepted and declined paths separately. Shopify Pixel Helper can report that a pixel is awaiting consent. I preserve that distinction when comparing with Events Manager.
  6. Checkout completion never reaches the browser pixel

I test the payment route that loses orders, including a return from an external payment app. Shopify says checkout_completed normally fires on the Thank you page, or on the first post-purchase offer page. It does not fire if its trigger page fails to load. This describes the browser event, not every server integration.

6 steps

How to diagnose it

Work through them in this order.

  1. Choose one destination. In Shopify, open Sales channels > Facebook & Instagram > Settings > Share data settings. Compare the selected pixel with Events Manager. Keep the same destination selected throughout the test.
  2. Check for two senders. List the installed channel, custom pixels and manual theme tracking. In Events Manager, inspect the events around the test timestamp. If there are repeated Purchases, save their details before disabling one sender and repeating the test.
  3. Read both data-sharing controls. Open Customer events and inspect the app pixel’s connection, activity and Data setting. Separately record the channel’s Standard, Enhanced or Maximum level. Shopify documents browser-pixel collection for Standard and Purchase sent through Conversions API as well for Enhanced and Maximum. Do not change privacy settings just to make a test pass. In Events Manager, compare Purchase arrivals before and after any agreed configuration change.
  4. Check the actual domain. Start from the live storefront used by shoppers, not an old preview. Write down the checkout route and check the destination’s warnings in Events Manager. Follow an explicit warning only when it applies to that store.
  5. Test consent upstream. In Customer events, use the app pixel’s Test action to open Shopify Pixel Helper. Record whether it loads, awaits consent, or reports an error. Accept through the normal banner for the accepted-path test. Compare the timestamp and result with Events Manager. Repeat decline without overriding the shopper’s choice.
  6. Complete the failing payment route. Note the order time, payment method and whether the shopper returns to the trigger page. Check checkout_completed in Shopify Pixel Helper, then look for Purchase in Events Manager around that time. If Shopify received the browser event but Meta did not, investigate the app-to-platform step. If the browser event never occurred, inspect the checkout path first.

I use Events Manager’s test view when the integration provides a supported test method. Otherwise I inspect normal event activity for the controlled order. I do not treat absence from one testing view as proof that the server sent nothing.

The upstream checks follow Shopify’s app-pixel testing and data-access documentation, Meta data-sharing settings, and checkout_completed reference.

A note from Daniilbefore you decide

Should you fix it yourself or bring in help?

You can compare destinations and run the same checkout through Shopify Pixel Helper. I would ask for help when the upstream event arrives but Purchase does not, or when a previous fix added another installation without proving which one works. Bring the test timeline and the list of senders.

One clear problem, fixed.

I fix the missing Purchase event on your Shopify store.

I complete a real test order and show its Purchase arriving in Events Manager, with the value and currency checked against the order.

When several systems disagree, or a cheaper fix already failed.

I match every Shopify order against what GA4, Meta and Google Ads recorded, wherever order-level data is available. I separate attributed and modelled totals that cannot be matched to individual orders.

I prove the cause in your own data, rebuild the broken tracking, and add a daily check so it does not silently break again.

Questions

Questions this symptom raises

Why is my Meta pixel not working?

I start by comparing the pixel selected in Shopify with the destination being inspected in Events Manager. Then I test one checkout and write down the last event I can see. I change the first failed step, then repeat that checkout.

Why is my Meta pixel not showing in Ads Manager?

I check the selected ad account and connected pixel before reinstalling anything. I inspect the same test order in Events Manager separately from campaign reporting. Shopify documents that the pixel must be connected and customer activity must occur before data appears.

What should I check when Meta pixel test events are not working?

I check the destination, Shopify Pixel Helper, app-pixel data access and the consent state. I record whether the checkout completion event reaches the app pixel before looking for the corresponding Purchase in Events Manager. An empty test screen by itself does not prove where the event was lost.
