How I solve it

What I build

I find out why a product is missing and fix the setting or the data that keeps it out. I don’t sell placement. OpenAI says ChatGPT’s shopping results are selected independently and are not ads, and nobody can honestly promise a rank in Google AI Mode either.

For Shopify’s own AI channels, most of the switches and rules live in admin. For eligible stores, Shopify Catalog sends products to ChatGPT and Copilot by default, and since 8 September 2026 to Meta as well. Shopify’s help pages disagree on whether Meta reads Catalog or the Facebook and Instagram channel, so I check both. A product drops out when the store or the product fails Catalog’s rules, or when someone turned off a channel’s Catalog access by hand. Google AI Mode and Gemini work differently. Shopify’s requirements there run through Google Merchant Center, so for Google I start with the feed errors.

Then there is the open web. Blocking AI crawlers in robots.txt doesn’t stop Shopify Catalog, but it does decide whether those crawlers can read your product pages. Google says AI Mode needs no special AI files or schema markup. The page has to be indexed and allowed to show a snippet. I still check the product markup. A page that says “sold out” while you are selling, or shows prices in the wrong currency, gives any crawler that reads it the wrong answer. More on those files in what AI agents read on your store.

Merchant Center, Shopping feeds and product-ID alignment have been part of my work since 2017, across 8 Upwork contracts. The AI channels read the same product data those feeds carry.

The process

How it works

6 steps. Scope and a fixed price are agreed before the first one.

  1. Read the channel switches

In Sales channels > Agentic I check whether "Allow Shopify to manage for me" is still on and, if it isn't, which channel lost Shopify Catalog access. Shopify says turning Catalog access off can take up to 7 days to take effect, and it turns off that channel's direct checkout too. Only the owner or staff with the Products > View and App and sales channel > Agentic permissions can open that page, so that is the access I ask for.

  2. Check the store against Shopify's rules

The store needs the Starter plan or higher and can't be in private mode. The Agentic Storefronts Supplemental Terms must be accepted, and Terms of service, Privacy policy and Return and refund policy filled in under Settings > Policies. For ChatGPT the store must also sell to US customers. Shopify's Catalog page adds that it weighs the account's overall standing and reviews eligibility over time.

  3. Check each missing product

It needs a title, at least one image, a price above zero, a product URL and publication to the Online Store, Hydrogen or Headless channel. It can't be Unlisted, hidden from search engines, B2B-only or sensitive. Then I read the Listing quality indicator in the Agentic search preview as a hint, because the channels rank on their own.

  4. Open Merchant Center

For Google AI Mode and Gemini, Shopify needs a valid account with products synced by the Google & YouTube channel or a feed. I read disapprovals and sync errors product by product. Google's own checkout adds conditions, such as products approved for free listings, a return policy, a support contact and native_commerce set to true. Shopify doesn't say how its integration maps onto them, so I treat them as clues, not a checklist.

  5. Compare the pages with admin

The product JSON-LD in the raw page source has to match the store: availability per variant, price, currency, brand and GTIN. Then I check robots.txt for Googlebot and Storebot-Google, the product sitemap, and the Search generative AI setting in Search Console, which has to include the site.

  6. Fix, then check on the platform's clock

I fix the agreed products: barcodes per variant (since 8 September 2026 a variant can hold up to 20, each with an optional type such as GTIN, UPC or EAN), brand, the policy pages, feed errors, hidden flags and theme markup. I confirm each change in admin, the feed or the page source the day it ships. Whether and when the product then shows is up to Shopify and Google, once they re-read the data.

What you get

  • A list of missing products, each with the rule it fails (Shopify Catalog, Merchant Center or the page itself) and the fix.
  • The fixes, made on the agreed products: barcodes per variant, the vendor set as brand, the three policy pages in place with wording you supply, Merchant Center errors, and Unlisted or hidden flags set by mistake.
  • Theme JSON-LD that matches admin for availability per variant, price, currency, brand and GTIN.
  • A dated channel sheet for your store: which AI channels can list you, which take payment inside the AI app, and for which buyer countries.
  • A plain note on what you can't control: ranking, platform review, and product types a channel won't take.

Built with

  • Shopify admin (Sales channels > Agentic, Settings > Policies)
  • Shopify Catalog
  • Google Merchant Center
  • the Google & YouTube channel
  • theme Liquid and product JSON-LD
  • robots.txt.liquid
  • Google Search Console
  • the AI Shopping Readiness Check

Capability Work I do; the proof below is from related projects.

Before → after

The closest real work I can show is a product-feed repair, not an AI-channel result.

A Greek herbal-tea brand described the same product with a different ID in Merchant Center, in GA4/Ads and in Meta. I rebuilt the Merchant Center feed on the Shopify variant ID and swept archived, draft and duplicate products out of it. Now one Shopify variant ID is the master everywhere. I have no AI-channel client results yet.

None yet. The other two receipts are Merchant Center and feed work. When I have an AI-channel result, it goes here with its date.

What you can look at

Run the free AI Shopping Readiness Check on your store before you write to me. From outside, it reads barcodes and brand on a sample of products, product markup, the three policies, the sitemap and the AI crawlers in robots.txt. It marks anything that lives only in admin or Merchant Center as Cannot tell, and it gives no score.

Client details anonymised. The receipts are Merchant Center and feed work, from delivery reports in 2026. No AI-channel client results yet. Platform rules on this page were read in Shopify, Google, OpenAI and Microsoft documentation on 2 October 2026.

Price and timeline

What it costs and how it runs

If the task is already clear, I can quote the implementation directly. If we first need to establish the cause or scope, we agree a separate diagnostic engagement.

Fixing product data and Merchant Center errors on an agreed set of products is a Focused Fix from USD 450, with a fixed quote in writing before I start. If you don’t know yet why products are missing, the Tracking Health Check, USD 395, looks into that one question read-only: one store, up to three systems (Shopify admin, Merchant Center and one more), and a written verdict 2 working days after kickoff and access. The verdict gives the cause, or what stays unknown and how to check it. Rebuilding a feed pipeline, or working across several stores, is a Custom Engineering Project from USD 1,500. Discussing the task is free.

The rest of the AI-channel work, including getting AI orders into your numbers, is on the AI shopping channels page.

A note from Daniilbefore you decide

When you don’t need this

If your store doesn’t sell to US customers, Shopify won’t put it in the ChatGPT channel, and no product fix changes that. That is a decision about where you ship. The same goes for categories OpenAI keeps out of ChatGPT shopping: its merchant guide names alcohol, nicotine, weapons and prescription-only medicines among them.

If the products nobody can buy inside the AI app are subscriptions, bundles, customizable or B2B-only, Shopify’s direct checkout doesn’t support those product types, so there is nothing to fix. Whether to keep direct checkout on at all is a separate decision.

If the readiness check shows barcodes, markup and policies as Clear, your products appear in the Agentic search preview and Merchant Center shows no errors for them, there is nothing here for me to fix. And if what you want is a higher rank in ChatGPT, I’m the wrong person to hire.

Questions

What people ask about this

Can you get my products into ChatGPT?

For an eligible store, Shopify already does that, so I don't sell it. OpenAI says Shopify merchants' product data reaches ChatGPT through Shopify Catalog, with nothing to apply for. Shopify's ChatGPT page adds that the store has to sell to US customers, though it can be based anywhere, on top of its Catalog rules. As of 2 October 2026, OpenAI says shopping in ChatGPT is live for users in the US. My part is finding out why a product fails that path and fixing it.

Will this make my products rank higher in ChatGPT or Google AI Mode?

I can't promise that, and I'd be careful with anyone who does. OpenAI says its shopping results are selected independently and are not ads. Google says there are no extra requirements or special optimizations for AI Mode. I fix eligibility and data. Ranking stays with the platforms.

My products show in Google AI Mode. Why is there no checkout there?

Shopify's direct checkout in Google AI Mode and Gemini needs a US-based store that sells to US customers, a valid Merchant Center account and products in Merchant Center. Only US shoppers see it, and on 2 October 2026 Shopify still described it as rolling out. Someone may also have switched it off under Sales channels > Agentic, and turning off a channel's Catalog access turns its direct checkout off too. Subscriptions, bundles, customizable and B2B-only products aren't supported there. Google lists its own checkout conditions, such as the native_commerce attribute. Shopify doesn't say how its integration maps onto them, so I check the listing in Merchant Center.

Can I keep some products out of AI channels?

Per product, yes: set it to Unlisted. It then also drops out of search engines, your sitemap and your store search, so use it with care. A full opt-out isn't available. Shopify says you can't opt out of Shopify Catalog itself, Shop's access can't be turned off under Sales channels > Agentic, and AI channels can still find products by crawling the web.

We sell from the UK or the EU. Does this apply to us?

Partly. Shopify's ChatGPT channel takes stores based anywhere if they sell to US customers. In-chat checkout in Copilot shows only to US shoppers, and on Meta only to shoppers in the US, Canada and Mexico. Google AI Mode's checkout also needs a US-based store, so a UK or EU store doesn't get it. Clean product data, Merchant Center and crawlable product pages matter wherever you sell.
